Holocaust Education

Close members of my family were murdered in Nazi death camps simply because they were Jewish. This led to my life long study of the Holocaust. I have undertaken training and am now a trustee of a number of Holocaust related organisations. I was appointed as a national Holocaust commissioner.

HOLOCAUST EDUCATION

Society today is seeing a resurgence of hatred, antisemitism, Islamaphobia and other forms of racism. Teaching and learning about the factors that resulted in the Holocaust, where prejudice and stereotyping can lead, learning facts about the Holocaust and more recent genocides is important for all civilised people. Teaching the truth about the Holocaust is essential to combat Holocaust denial and those who are intent on spreading lies and hatred. Visiting authentic sites and seeing the outcome of hatred is an important step in understanding.

Working with Holocaust survivors has led to my interest in more recent genocides and in Rwanda in particular.
I work independently but also closely with outstanding Holocaust education organisations. These organisations provide excellent opportunities to learn and to train.

I teach about the Holocaust and later genocides and I speak about my family story. I organise educational conferences for sixth form students and study trips to Holocaust touched countries in Europe and to Rwanda.

Awarded DBE (Dame Commander of British Empire) for services to national education and Holocaust education.

In 2007 I undertook a year’s study at the Imperial War museum which resulted in my Fellowship in Holocaust Studies. I have continued to train in Holocaust related areas with a number of organisations.
